Our last session with Constable Gordon

Today, was our final session with Constable Gordon.

We discussed booster seats, seat belts, how to enter and exit cars safely... and they were all given a new job - they are now your official seat belt police officers! So don't be surprised if your 5 year old reminds you about it!

Ammiel is our tallest person in the class, and as you can see from this height chart, he is still a fair way away from being tall enough to be out of a booster seat. A few more years to go at least.

Constable Gordon is going to organise for each class to have one of these height charts to put on display in our rooms, so we can all make sure that our kids are safe while travelling in cars.

Anabelle and Constable Gordon then role played two children pushing, shoving and yelling in the back seat of the car and we discussed how dangerous that is for the driver. Feel free to throw Constable Gordon's name in there if you ever need to...if you have siblings/children arguing in the back seat. It might be a good reminder :)

Next we got the new seat-belt police officers into uniform and these new recruits got to check out what it's really like inside a police car. The lights were flashing, the sirens blasting, and lots of unsual messages were called out over the loud speaker... our new recruits have some training to do!

Finally Constable Gordon showed us all his bells and whistles. His handcuffs, his pepper spray, etc. It was all VERY exciting!

A huge thank you to Constable Gordon for all the learning and fun we've had over the past 4 sessions, we promise to take our jobs seriously, and keep everyone safe around roads and cars!

Author of the Week ~ Sienna

Each week one of our fabulous writers will be published here on our classroom blog, in celebration of their hard work...

Sienna is a fluffy cat sleeping amongst the trees. Sienna is a snowy lake, waves coming down the hills. Sienna is a dark blue sky with the moon shining out.

This piece of writing was in preparation for our Writing Exchange with Fenwick School. Sienna did a fabulous job of using descriptive metaphors to describe herself. Her vocabulary choices help to paint a clear picture for the reader. Keep it up Sienna!

Discovery Time ~ Dinosaurs!

Last Friday during discovery time we had a dinosaur theme running...which was taken from a list of areas that the children expressed interest in.

A group of Enviro Kids went with Mrs Seward to care for the Butterfly Meadow and those who chose to stay behind could choose from...

Making dinosaur masks, completing their own dinosaur skeletons, cracking open frozen dinosaur eggs, or even taking on the role of an archaeologist and digging for 'dinosaur' bones in the sand tray.

They had a fabulous time!

Our Writing Exchange with Fenwick School in Oamaru

At the beginning of the year I signed Room 6 up to complete a writing exchange with another class, in a different place in NZ. We were sent a kit, and got started on some pretty complex writing. The program was aimed at Year 4s and above, so our little guys did pretty well with the task!

We each wrote metaphors describing ourselves, and choose our best one. This was then published on to the back of one of the postcards that we were sent in the kit. When arranged alongside the other postcards, our writing makes a collective piece of writing, and on the other side a collective piece of art.

We also all contributed to a large poster that has lots of information about our class, our school and our learning.

All of this will get packaged up, and sent off to Sharon's class at Fenwick School in Oamaru.

She will in turn send us the work that her class has completed.

We can't wait to hear from them, and see what they think of our writing!

Stepping Out ~ with Constable Gordon

This week and next, we have 4 sessions with Constable Gordon. He has been teaching us about safety around vehicles in a range of situations - on roads, in driveways, and in car parks.

The children have been learning that no matter where they are, every time they need to cross a road, cross a driveway, or walk through a car park... they need to...

First we practiced on a pretend road...

The children learnt that they must keep looking to the left and right even while they cross.

They must always hold an adults hand...

We then practiced using the zebra crossing, making sure we follow the same steps...

Next week we have two more sessions with constable Gordon. I wonder what we will learn next?

Author of the Week ~ Paolo

Each week one of our fabulous writers will be published here on our classroom blog, in celebration of their hard work...

Gliding, kicking in the pool,
Water as cold as the North Pole.
Wriggling, swimming like a starfish,
The ocean has lots of animals.

By Paolo

Paolo has thought of lots of interesting verbs (doing words) to add description to his swimming poem. As someone who is very new to speaking and writing in English, this is a fabulous piece of writing. Keep it up Paolo!

A cat with shimmering eyes and fur as fluffy as a mouse. With a scarf for when it is snowy and soft white stockings. Playing kindly, biting toys with other cats. Gliding with wings, I wish I could fly. Claws as sharp as love hearts. It feels like flowers. He shows his cute, tiny face, he is attractive.

Imogen has been so creative and used her imagination to paint this colourful and imaginative story for her readers in this independent piece of writing. She has chosen lovely, descriptive vocabulary which makes it much more interesting, and added lots of detail. Keep it up Imogen!

Caring for the Butterfly Meadow

During Discovery Time on Friday, the children always have the choice of going to the butterfly meadow.

Last Friday, my little group helped to carry water over to give the swan plants a drink in this hot weather. We checked for caterpillars on the Junior School swan plants, but didn't find any that needed rescuing. Once we had watered we then began to weed the grass from around the base of the swan plants. We made a significant start on what will be quite a big job. But little by little we will work away on it and bring it back to its former glory.
