Author of the Week ~ Ella

Each week one of our fabulous writers will be published here on our classroom blog, in celebration of their hard work...

Sailing across the treacherous seas, our adventure begins. Dolphins are splashing under my ship and I can see a shark. The shark is dangerous. I like sharks, and the shark nearly ate me! It was wavey. I heard the waves crashing in front of my ship, it was about to start raining. The waves were humongous but we were about to get to the calm island. The island was cool and wet. I could see the wet waves. We were climbing through the mossy rocks, it was wet up on the rocks. We finally found the spot where the treasure was. We dug a little hole. Our spade hit the treasure. We tried to get the treasure but it was too heavy to pick up. At last we got it out. We carefully unlocked the padlock and inside there was shiny rubies and gold. It was amazing. It was a dark tunnel that we went through, then we had to get back to our ship.

This piece of writing was completed over 3 days. We were focusing on using prepositions to describe to the reader 'where' things in our story were. Ella told us a detailed and enthralling tale of adventure, with lots of interesting vocabulary to help us 'see' the story in our mind. Keep it up Ella!

In the Beginning ~ Writing and Artwork

Last week we learnt about organising our ideas in writing. We read the Maori Legend ~ In the beginning ~ and retold the story in our own words.

The children were encouraged to add detail to each part of their writing, and focused on one section per day.

The first day we tried to hook the reader in, and just focused on writing a detailed beginning. The following day was the middle. And the final day we wrote a satisfying ending.

The children then viewed our SOLO rubric for 'Organising our Ideas' and reflected upon their writing to see how much they had achieved and extended themselves.

We also each chose one of the six guardians from the story, and completed a piece of artwork to accompany our published writing.

This is our longest and most detailed piece of writing yet! We can't wait to share it with you, so if you have a moment, pop in before or after school to have a read.

Here we are starting our first drafts of our Guardian Artworks to accompany our writing... to view the completed pieces, pop into class to see the display.

Year One Swimming Sports

We were blessed with a gorgeous day to showcase our swimming skills, following two weeks of daily lessons.

It was all about participating and having fun! And the kids did a fabulous job of that.

Thanks to all who were able to come along to support their child!

Author of the Week ~ Alen

Each week one of our fabulous writers will be published here on our classroom blog, in celebration of their hard work...

Long, long ago Rangi and Papatuanuku lay on the ground. They had six sons. It was a very cramped, dark life. Their parents were above them. The children decided to push their parents apart. Tù tried first then Tangaroa tried second, then Tawhirimatea tried third and then Tàne helped. Tàne did it. When he pushed their parents apart the parents cried and cried. The Maori still say that when it rains, it is because Rangi the sky father is crying.

This piece of writing was completed over 3 days. We were focusing on organising our ideas, so on day one we wrote the beginning, the middle on the next day, and on the final day we completed the writing and edited. Alen added lots of detail to his retelling of the story "In the Beginning" and even added descriptive vocabulary such as 'cramped'. Keep it up Alen!
