Author of the week ~ Julia

Each week one of our fabulous writers will be published here on our classroom blog, in celebration of their hard work.

Long, long ago deep in the wide, blue moana lived seven little fish and their mother. One day their mother said to her fishes “I need to get some food for you. Listen, this is vital, because you might meet Tataraimaka”. Looking out into the clear, blue water she said to her babies “I have to go”. The babies were playing in the moana. They forgot everything that their mother said to them. They played and played. Then they saw a black shadow, it was Tataraimaka! The net dropped into the water. They cried for their mum. Their tears made the water salty. Tane, the guardian of the forest snatched the net. Then Tane tossed it as far as he could. They turned into seven stars. We now call these stars Matariki.

As Matariki celebrations are occurring all around the country right now, we learnt about one of the many stories of Matariki ~ The Seven Fish of Matariki. The children then retold the story in their own words. We were focusing on using a range of different sentence starters to make our writing more interesting to read. We also collected a range of interesting vocabulary from the story for the children to use, and Julia independently used several of these -  moana (ocean), vital, TataraimakaThis is a well thought out and very detailed piece of writing Julia, keep up the great work!
